So you met, liked each other, started going out and suddenly you are no longer 'unattached'.

The pink streak was wonderful. Your partner was all fun, giving, loving, attentive and it felt like the sparks would never die out.

Then suddenly, everything changed.

Well, maybe not suddenly. It may have started with an innocuous comment, a difference of opinion on what is moral/immoral, what is greed and what is self-preservation. It could even be a difference in desires, ambition or drive.

Or the worrisome, a difference in what each one of you wants from the relationship. You may not have realized that he would become so serious about it or maybe you were thinking of the bedroom wall color while he doesn't even know if you guys will keep in touch?

The first thing to do is to acknowledge that there is a difference in wants, desires and needs. Until unless you can acknowledge this, there is no way you will be able to do something about it.

The second thing is to see if there is any common ground that you can find. Can you change a little, can he accommodate. Are both of you or any one of you willing to accept the others desires?

If not, there is very little in terms of success coming your way. If yes, try it out for sometime. Believe you are together for the long haul and then see how each of you react.

If you do come to the conclusion that these are irreconcilable, then you really have to think hard about the future of the relationship.

I do hope it does not come to that.

Yes, we agree you can't keep looking into each others eyes forever, but try to maintain eye contact for as long as it's possible. I think it happens.
its very difficult to get or find all the qualities that you like in one person and hence when different people personify the qualities you seek, you tend to get attracted to them.
ofcourse you will need to ask yourself if its really love.
you maybe going thru a rough patch in your relationship and suddenly the new person seems like someone who understands and appreciates you and your partner does not.
it could be the little bit special he makes you feel.

the fact that he notices your hair or your new shoes or simply finds it within him to listen to you and nod back in acceptance of what you are saying could be enough. but what if you are in love with two people not because you are going through a rough patch but because you actually do like them both.

ask yourself why? what is it that attracts you to both and what will you do if you could only save one from drowning. Love is not territorial. as humans you have an infinite capacity to love, it is the love that makes us mate that seems to possess us so deeply that we being to feel guilty about it. can you allow your lover the luxury of loving another person as much as you? if not, then why should they?

most people who tend to fall for two people at the same time, seem to be in an undecided state and sooner or later figure it out that it is difficult if not impossible to keep it up. the many pulls including time, emotion, physical presence and need will being to hamper an equitable division of your love and you will being to gravitate towards one or the other. you may even break ties with one for the other and the reason you may choose one of them could be as bizarre as hair or as practical as a stable future life.

whether or not you choose one over the other, the answer to the question, can you be in love with 2 people at the same time? is a resounding yes.

It started as an innocent question from a friend. she wanted to tease me about my many 'love' relationships.

'you seem to be in love so badly and then in a few months you say you were in love but aren't any more. How the FCUK do you know you are in love?'

I started by the most obvious answers:
when you want to spend every moment with the person
when you feel physical pain when you are away from each other
when you want to share the good news first with them and want to shield them from the bad news
when you feel that everything they do is awesome
when you feel that every thought needs to include them
when you say their name out loud while addressing someone else

and slowly and surely I was talking to myself more than her,

when you feel the world is lonely and the only one giving it company, color, music and any sense of existence is that one person.
when the smile on that face makes the entire universe glow.
when you would want to walk through fire to reach them.

she sat there transfixed. I noticed a tear at the threshold.
she let out a long sigh.

- so what happens?
- what happens?
- yeah, what goes wrong she says

I guess you always remain in love, just that you seem to want different things. you could make the heavens move for that one person only to find out they aren't as heavenly as you thought them to be. that doesn't mean you were never in love with them. it just means there is someone else out there who needs and warrants that love all the more.

and what if it sticks.

then you should hold on to it with dear life and guard it like a mother her baby, coz love like that, true love comes around once every cosmic approval. you are blessed and so is the one you love. then, when you want to do all this for the rest of your life, you know, you know you are in love!

Is there such a thing as "true love?"

If we base our idea of what true love is on fairy tales, we might think that finding prince charming or an enchanting princess and living happily ever after is the ultimate goal. But for most mortals, striving for such ideals is unrealistic, and may even leave us feeling unfulfilled or let down. The reality is that being and staying in love takes continual work and patience, even though this might not seem utterly romantic, in that storybook sense. Couples who have healthy relationships find ways of working together, and this in and of itself could be considered a sign of true love.

It's true that in many cultures, people who are "in love" create long-term partnerships and/or get married. We may hear of the high divorce rates, but lots of these couples do actually stay together. Yes, there are couples that have been married for 60 years and still feel passionately in love, and there are others who care deeply for one another even though the lust is gone (or maybe never existed!). Of course, sometimes we may not even want to hear about the happy, lovey-dovey couples because we're feeling romantically unlucky or lovelorn ourselves.

Keep in mind that the reasons why some relationships don't last are as varied as the different kinds of people we are; in many cases, the partners simply grow apart because they have grown and changed as individuals, and seek different, more fulfilling opportunities for love. If a particular couple "falls out of love," yet each partner goes on to seek a more satisfying love with another person, could this be an example of "true love" in action?

Love can also vary by degrees: some couples feel deeply intense and passionate, while others appreciate one another for intellectual reasons or admire one another's ambition, dedication, or creativity. When is the last time you read a fairy tale where the main characters appreciated each other's brilliant musicianship, eloquent writing, or compassion for humanity? (Well, maybe in Shakespeare's writings....)

Love is not an easily definable concept but it may be helpful to try to spell it out. A psychologist, Richard Sternberg proposed that love is the result of three components — intimacy, passion and commitment. The love is strongest when all three of these components are strong. John Lee proposed an alternate theory by identifying six styles (or colors) of love. How do you define love?

Perhaps, just for fun though, it might help to look at this elusive "true love" in another light. Look around you and see all of the expressions of love in our world: people devoting huge chunks of their lives for the human rights of others, people setting aside time to volunteer in their community, parents and caregivers protecting and nurturing their children and families, young people learning from and sharing things with their grandparents. Or, how about giving and receiving unconditional love to and from the animals in our lives?

So, are humans capable of staying in love? Sure they are, as there are lots of models around us of people who love and care deeply about one another. Some people follow the philosophy of "better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all." Instead of looking at all the heartaches around us, why not look to all of the examples of the different types of love in the world? Perhaps if we think of love as a broadly defined term, it's possible to see "true love" all around us.

An intimate relationship is a particularly close interpersonal relationship. It is a relationship in which the participants know or trust one another very well or are confidants of one another, or a relationship in which there is physical or emotional intimacy.

Intimate relationships play a central role in the overall human experience.^[1] Humans have a universal need to belong which is satisfied when intimate relationships are formed.^[2] Intimate relationships consist of the people that we are attracted to, whom we like and love,romantic and sexual relationships, and those who we marry and provide emotional and personal support.^[1] Intimate relationships provide people with a social network of people that provide strong emotional attachments and fulfill our universal needs of belongingness and the need to be cared for.^[1]

The systematic study of intimate relationships is a relatively new area of research within the field of social psychology that has emerged within the last few decades.^[1] Although the systematic study of intimate relationships is fairly recent, social thought and analysis of intimate relationships dates back to early Greek philosophers.^[1] Early scholarly studies were also interested in intimate relationships but were limited to dyads or small groups of people in the public and narrowly examined behaviours such as competing and cooperation, negotiation and bargaining and compliance and resistance.^[1]

Physical intimacy is characterized by romantic or passionate love and attachment, or sexual activity.

For me personally, spending time together doing anything is both romantic & fun.

We could watch a movie, a sunset, a sunrise, a child play, a dog, a play, a group of friends laugh, tv or old photos. anything.

But even exercising, jogging, walking, cooking, cleaning can be fun.
